What is revenge bedtime procrastination?

It's 10pm. You know you need to put your head down and get some rest, but it's been a loooong day and it feels like you haven't had a single minute to yourself. What's the harm in a few minutes of mindless screen time?

There's a phrase for this behaviour: revenge bedtime procrastination — taking “revenge” on your busy day by squeezing in mindless relaxation at the expense of sleep.

Why do we do this?

Simply put, it's an immediately gratifying way to reclaim time that we feel has been co-opted by other people and demands throughout the day.
